MY STORY

My life began in 1983 in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, when I was born to young parents and an older sister. Soon after I was born, my mom and dad separated, leaving my mother to raise my sister and me alone. We moved to Washington Heights, NYC, my mother's hometown, but quickly encountered high crime and harsh living conditions and mom decided it was time to go.

Fortunately, my mom’s close relationship with her aunt in Virginia Beach, Virginia, offered us a way out. Living far from our relatives, my mother ensured we stayed connected to our elders and heritage. Growing up in a Puerto Rican household in rural Virginia presented its challenges but even as we faced the pressures of assimilation, we stayed connected to our cultural teachings, cooking and spirituality.

As a little one, it was common for my family to warmly tease me about “my stories”. A favorite being the one where I asked, Mom, do you remember my boyfriend with the Red Camaro? I was like seven, and clearly had never had a boyfriend.

As I came to know myself as a teenager and young woman, I began to understand love, gender and humanity in a less binary way and I began exhibiting more fluidity in my sexuality. I faced relentless bullying while I struggled with undiagnosed learning difficulties like dyslexia and autism.

Amidst these challenges, my spiritual gifts began to emerge. I found myself communicating with all kinds of spirits, most influentially my grandfather, who became a protective presence in my life.

As I grew my intuitive powers did too. I began attuning to people's energy and challenges with keen accuracy. Remember my “stories”? Turns out, I had the ability to intuit past lives and situations with myself and later, with others.

As special as this was, I often felt isolated and strange. I had no one to relate to and I felt like the odd person in the family. My intuitive gifts could sometimes bring pain. I often struggled to differentiate between others' ailments and my own. This lead to periods of anxiety and depression.

So this is my story and as I meet others like myself, I realize that my story isn’t unique. This is how many people's psychic abilities work - different from what most people imagine.
